Master degree programs are designed to grant an individual a master’s degree in a certain field of study or an area of practice that is professional. There are two main types of master’s degrees and they include Master of Arts Degree and Master of Science Degree. The programs will be given in either a course-based schedule or a research based schedule or sometimes a mixture of both.

Some master degree programs require a dissertation, which is sometimes called a thesis. A dissertation is a paper that will contain the author’s findings and research of the subject that is chosen and is submitted for a professional qualification or a degree. Usually the word thesis is used when in a master degree program and the word dissertation is used in connection with a doctorate.

There has been a steady increase in Master of Arts Degrees, especially in the United States recently and it has been reported that there are twice as many master’s degrees being completed as there were in the 1970’s.

The duration of a master’s degree program varies depending on the university or the country. For instance, in the European System the program is usually up to two years of study postgraduate. In the United States and Japan you can complete a master’s program in up to six years. Denmark will award a master’s degree in up to five years of study. In some countries such as Ireland, England, and Scotland it can be earned in two ways. The first is awarded after completing four or five years of academic studies and is an undergraduate academic degree. The second is a postgraduate degree that takes up to two years of the program.

If the master’s degree is postgraduate the admission requirements to the program might mean that you hold a bachelor’s degree but you may be able to qualify if you have work experience that is relevant. You will require a master’s degree to go on to a doctoral. Sometimes your bachelor’s degree will have to be in the same field as the master’s degree that you are seeking. Other programs are not concerned with what your bachelor’s degree major was.
